If we look at the concept of credit scores and what impact it has on your life, there are basically three scenarios
1. You have no credit history
2. You have a bad credit score or profile
3. You do have a good credit score and is keen to maintain this
Strategies for building a credit profile
Having no credit history is almost as bad as having a poor credit rating. The problem is that you need a history of credit management if you ever want to be able to get any type of loan. Approach the building of your credit history with a serious mindset. You will have to have a lot of self discipline if you do not want to fall into the debt trap during your credit building efforts.
You need to apply for a credit card or personal loan first. If you have never had credit before this might be a bit more difficult than it sounds. You might have to get a friend or family member to co-sign the application. Once you have the loan, make sure that YOU PAY IT OFF. The whole point of this exercise is to prove that you can pay off a loan. To do this it might be a better idea to get a small personal loan rather than a credit card, since it is easier to pay off a fixed loan than trying to manage a credit card, where the credit balance becomes available again once you have paid off a minimum amount.
Once you have paid off the loan, or if you are close to paying off the loan (after a couple of months) you can possibly apply for another loan. Use this loan to pay off the first loan if you haven't done so already, and once again, start paying off this loan on a regular basis. In this way you will build a good credit history and you will be able to apply for more credit. Just be careful to manage your credit - do it from the perspective that you want to just be able to prove to potential creditors that you CAN pay off a loan, and not because you really are living beyond your means.
Since if you do this, you will very soon find that you need the following:
Plans to improve your bad credit reputation
You need to get a picture of how bad your credit score really is. You can get a free credit report from the AnnualCreditReport dot com website. Just be aware that this will give you your credit history and credit report, but not your actual score! You will have to pay extra if you want to get your actual credit score.
In order to repair your bad credit you can do the following:
- review your credit report for inaccuracies. Report these to the relevant credit bureau and ask them to investigate. If there is really an error, they are obliged by law to remove the entry from the report. This will gain you a few points.
- The bulk of the work however goes into making sure that you pay off your debts in a timely fashion. Here is where you will have to make some hard choices in life. You will just have to find some extra cash somewhere to put towards paying off those debts. This could come either from giving up some expenses or getting an additional income.
Keep your good credit rating!
So you have managed to gain a credible credit profile you want to make sure that you maintain it. The best way to do that is to be vigilant and pay your loans in time as well as your monthly bills such as utility bills and so forth. Here is a good tip with regards to maintaining a good history - do not just close older credit cards if you have managed to pay them off. The history of those cards will also disappear from your credit history and this will actually impact you negatively!
