Libya has been going through a rough time lately and it seems that their problems are not ending as fast as everyone would like. The fighting still continues and the number of casualties is increasing day by day. Hiding proved to be easy for Muammar Gaddafi because of the influence he has over his tribes and because of the large amount of money and gold that he was willing to give to various people in order to help him out. Many speculations have been made regarding the amount of money that Gaddafi has stolen from the Libyan people. Some even say that the astronomical numbers reach 25 tons of gold.
The amount of gold that used to be held in Tripoli was up to 10 billion dollars. These days however, who can tell exactly how much gold is left after the dictator has so selfishly taken the money and left. It is believed that much of the money was used to keep the war going on the streets of Libya and also to pay for the protection of the former leader came from the gold that he had managed to sell. Also, Gaddafi chose to pay the militia and some of the tribes for protection and, of course, for attacking the Libyan people.
When things started to get serious and the rebel uprising spread in the whole country, Gaddafi began selling more gold. Nobody can tell for sure how much gold has the colonel managed to steal but unofficial voices have declared that almost a fifth of the country's gold resources has disappeared.
It is clear by now that the money resulted from selling the gold was not used to help the Libyan people but instead it was used to pay for the war expenses. The reality of what is happening is the fact that Gaddafi managed to steal incredible amounts of gold and money and has hidden the country up until now!
The local jewelry shops have actually reported that Gaddafi started to sell Libya's gold from April this year. In the beginning it was 22 carts gold coins but as things started to take a turn for the worst he begun selling 12 kg gold bars that actually cost half a million each. Gold has played a significant part in the Libyan revolution, too bad that it was used in committing war crimes and not in doing good things.
