Cast iron and steel have almost identical conductivity ratings and both are suitable for stoves; however, the Insurance Information Institute recommends cast iron. In either case, the thicker the metal, the longer the stove will last.
This pellet-fed stoves are a newcomer on the wood stove scene. They use a processed wood pellet that resembles rabbit food and is fed to the stove's combustion chamber electronically. Pellet stoves have the advantage of having a steady and easily controlled fuel source. The only downside to them is that their electronic controls won't work if the power is out.
An appliance with at least 75 mm (3 in) of clearance, but less than 175 mm (7 in) of clearance, between the appliance bottom and the floor pad protection pad shall be supported off the floor protection pad by a single course of 90 mm (3.5) thick hollow masonry, clay, or concrete units arranged to allow air circulation through the hollow cores or when supported directly on the the floor pad, provided that two sheet metal plates, the size of the appliance bottom and at least 24 gauge in thickness, are installed between the appliance bottom and at least 25 mm (1 in) apart and 25 mm (1 in) from the appliance bottom and the floor pad by noncombustible spacers or attachments to the appliance legs.
The Table 2 clearances for uncertified appliances and the listed clearances of certified (or "listed") appliances may be reduced in accordance with the clearance provisions of certified heat shields or if the following requirements are satisfied in accordance with Table 3: Wall protection shall be installed to provide clearance along the bottom of the shield equivalent to at least 25 mm (1 in) and not more than 75 mm (3 in), and clearance along the top of the shield of at least 75 mm (3 in), to allow a vertical flow of air. This protection shall extend at least 500 mm (20 in) above the appliance and 450 mm (18 in) beyond the sides of the appliance as shown in Figure 6.
The ceiling protection shall have a least 75 mm (3 in) edge clearance on all sides, as shown in Figure 6. If an adhesive is used to support noncombustible material, it shall not ignite or lose its adhesive qualities at temperatures likely to be encountered. The heat shield mounting hardware shall be installed to allow full vertical ventilation. Such hardware shall be placed not closer than 200 mm (8 in) from the vertical center-line of the appliance, except for diagonal corner installations.
The same principle applies to protecting combustible materials from the heat produced by woodburning appliances. You can either put a generous clearance distance between the appliance
and combustibles, or you can install an air-cooled radiation shield or a certified
commercial shield to protect the combustibles. The required clearance distances for certified appliances are given on the appliance labels and in the instruction booklets. Uncertified appliances with no shielding require clearances as great as 1200 mm (48
in.) to the front, sides and rear, and can easily occupy more than half the width of a room! Using properly installed heat shields, you can reduce the amount of space your woodburning appliance occupies.
