Pearl Street Compost Program

The city of Boulder is known for being one of the greenest cities in the country and is making all sorts of efforts to make sure that their citizens are aware of this. The city is trying to encourage its residents to help reduce their overall waste by recycling and composting more. These measures have been seen in Boulder schools, corporations, local businesses, and within people's homes for quite some time now.
With that being said, the city has recently decided to start a public composting program along the Pearl Street Mall to help further this movement. This program was set into motion by the City of Boulder's Local Environmental Action Division (LEAD) and the Parks and Recreation Department. The compost bins which have been installed at three pre-existing waste stations on the Pearl Street Mall are receiving a lot of attention as well as compostable waste. They are helping to increase the public awareness about Boulder's goal to become a zero waste community and to live sustainably. The waste that is collected from city compost bins will eventually have a new life as enriched soil. This soil is used to grow local produce and to feed the city's gardens.
The compost bins are located at on the Pearl Street Mall at 10th Street, 13th Street, and between Broadway and 11th Street. These waste stations are fully functional recycling centers that provide the public with a means to follow through with the city's plan of action. Another huge effort that is dramatically reducing the amount of trash from the City of Boulder is the move they made in the past year to single-stream-recycling which includes paper, bottles and cans. As more and more store owners across Boulder and in other cities in Colorado adopt zero waste programs, you can be sure that there will also be more compost receptacles available to the public.
Most people living in Boulder are there because they enjoy the overall sustainable lifestyle; so many people participate in green practices. This community has adapted many programs that will eventually be thought of as the norm for the city's youth. The goal is to become a sustainable, but thriving community that utilizes new technologies and resources to decrease their overall environmental impact. This goal is a very real thing that will soon be recognized worldwide. Green innovations and renewable ways of thinking are no longer a future thought; they are current reality as can be seen in places like Boulder, Colorado.
