Accredited units are officially recognised as competent facilities and have been confirmed by professionals of meeting specific requirements. By becoming familiar with the standards of the main medical tourism boards, patients can best choose the care that meets their personal needs and rest assured they are receiving the same quality of care they would expect to receive in their home countries.

Joint Commission International

Joint Commission International (JCI) is headquartered in the U.S. and has accredited more than 220 public and private healthcare organisations in 33 countries. The accreditation standards are based on patient safety recommendations by international medical experts, clinicians and patient safety advocates. These standards have been tested in every world region. JCI's focus is on quality improvement and patient safety, specifically on infection control, medication safety, and facility safety and standards compliance. JCI is widely regarded as the gold level of international healthcare accreditation and clinics and hospitals all over the world often seek to obtain this as a door to attracting international patients.

International Organization for Standardization

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in New York in 1947. Its ISO 9000 family overseas quality management for over a million organizations in 175 countries, with industries ranging from agriculture and construction to mechanical engineering, medicine and information technology. For medical tourism, the specific rulings fall under ISO9001:2000. To become ISO certified, each organization must meet customer quality and relevant regulatory requirements while aiming to enhance customer satisfaction. ISO is a familiar and respected certification stamp, but it is not a medical accreditation body. ISO certification refers to the official business procedures being followed, not the quality of treatment being provided.

Trent Accreditation Scheme

The Trent Accreditation Scheme (TAS) is a UK-based board and lies under the UK National Health Service (NHS). All TAS surveyors work within the NHS system and/or private hospitals, mainly as clinical staff or managers. There are 40 Trent accredited clinics and hospitals in the UK and Hong Kong. Clinics that meet TAS standards are given two years accreditation. The board continuously develops, reviews and updates the requirements. More than just a checklist, TAS focuses on a peer-review method in which surveyors discuss procedures with hospital staff and patients. TAS standards oversee equipment, clinical audit, research, training, management and education.

Accreditation Canada International

Accreditation Canada (AC) has used research and evidence-based programs to encourage quality improvements and sustainability in healthcare for more than 50 years. The standards board uses literature reviews, health experts, clinic employees, focus groups and national web-based conferences to devise its Required Organizational Practices (ROPs). These practices focus on enhancing patient safety and minimizing risk through: extensive training, safe injection and surgical practice, hand hygiene and transfer of client information. With clients in the Middle East, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America, the international staff has experience in health services management, quality improvement, and accreditation.

Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) has more than 30 years in the development of healthcare standards. Founded in Australia, the organization now has members in the Middle East, India and the Asia Pacific region. ACHSI uses an annual review to ensure continuous quality improvement and patient safety over a four-year membership program. Members have established procedures for patients being discharged or transferred and a formalized follow-up process to reduce risk and complications. Patient care policies are based on Australian, domestic country and internationally published guidelines. Systems for infection control, emergency management and security management are in place to ensure a safe environment. ACHSI encourages multilingual communication and international symbols to ease patient fears about the care being received.
