Over the next few years, the number of vacancies in this field is expected to rise to 460,000. There are several reasons for the impending lack of pilots. In addition to the cost and length of schooling required, the majority of current pilots are nearing mandatory retirement age creating a huge void. The worldwide shortage has already brought different countries to North America in the hopes of recruiting people to fly for them. The benefits and pay packages being offered is becoming more competitive. One company is offering such perks as profit sharing and a chauffeur driven car to and from work.
The shortage has created an atmosphere of competition that is a great benefit to all pilots. In addition it will be easier to gain seniority as more of the current pilots retire. Someone just entering the field will not have to wait as long as before to receive pay increases and choose the routes they wish to fly.
