Inkheart the movie was just released January 23rd. The movie stars Brendan Fraser, Eliza Bennett, Paul Bettany, and Helen Mirren. It was one of the top 10 films for its opening weekend, grossing $3.7 million. Did you know that the film is based on several popular fantasy books?
Inkheart was written by Cornelia Funke almost 4 years ago and centers around a father and daughter who embark on many adventures, some of them dangerous. The father, Mo, has passed along his love of books to his daughter Meggie however Meggie, now thirteen, has always wondered why her father never read to her aloud. One day a mysterious man visits them and adds a critical piece to this puzzle: turns out Mo is a Silvertongue, someone with the ability to bring characters to life when he reads about them out loud. But there's a twist to this "gift" - when someone is "read to life" another person sometimes disappears into the book in their place. Mo has no way of knowing which book characters or humans will be chosen. When Meggie was three years old Mo read from a book called Inkheart and ended up releasing several evil characters into the world: Capricorn, Basta (his servant), and Dustfinger. Unfortunately, Meggie's mother Teresa was sent to the Inkworld in their place. Since then Mo vowed never to real aloud again.
Dustfinger warns Mo that Capricorn is looking for him. Mo decides they must leave their current home because the risk of being discovered by Capricorn is too great. Thus they head to Italy, where Meggie's great aunt Elinor lives. For Meggie this explains why she and her father never stay in one place for very long; her father is trying to stay one step ahead of Capricorn.
The merciless Capricorn has been hell bent on finding Mo for years. He knows of Mo's gift and wants to force Mo to read an evil creature into existence that can then be used against his enemies. Capricorn is described as someone who "get please from terrifying people until their knees are so week they can hardly stand. Nothing gives Capricorn more pleasure."
The evil Capricorn is also looking for the author of Inkheart so he can force him to write a new, more diabolical ending to the book. Mo has been searching for the writer of Inkheart as well but he wants the author to write a new ending that will help him send Capricorn and Basta back into the Inkworld.
When Capricorn learns that Mo has a daughter he decides to use her as bait to get Mo to do his bidding. Eventually Mo, Meggie, Dustfinger, and even Elinor are pursued and caught up in a world of dangerous adventure, mystery, and intrigue.
When it was time to cast Mo's character the studio wanted to use a big Hollywood name. However they soon discovered that Cornelia Funke had other plans: she informed them that when she wrote the book in 2005 she wrote it specifically with Brendan Fraser in mind. She insisted that they cast Brendan as Mo and well, it's apparent that she prevailed. There's talk that Inkspell, the second of three books about Mo and Meggie, will make it to the big screen as well. No word yet on whether Inkdeath, the last book in the trilogy, will make it to theaters but Cornelia Funke specifically dedicated that installment to Brendan Fraser.
Inkheart the book is a wonderfully charming urban fantasy story with heavy doses of humor and adventure. It's one of those rare fantasy books that can be enjoyed by teens and adults alike.
