Many people who live in Asia use sky lanterns to celebrate their lives. They use them as a symbol of tranquility and healing. They believe that when a lantern is lit and raised to the sky that their troubles will float away and their minds will be clear. They also believe sky lanterns will bring spirits back onto the ground and that will bring them good luck form that point on.
They believe that the ash falling from the sky is actually remnants of their spirit guides that will encourage only good things to happen for them. This is a tradition that has gone on for hundreds of years.
The sky lanterns were primarily used in the military to send signals for help or to let the other members of the military know where they were, the use was very functional at that time. The soldiers could use them to see in the night. They could use them to warn the people of dangers. They could use them to signal distress or to just communicate to their fellow men. This was an important tool to the military a hundred or more years ago. The soldiers also felt that the lanterns could bring them good luck.
After the lanterns stopped being used by the military they took on a more decorative feel often used in celebrations. And sometimes actually as a way of lighting a persons home. During celebrations people would lite a lantern and hope that by releasing it up to the heavens this would bring them favour and luck. Often the ash seen falling away from the lantern was seen as there deceased relatives trying to return to earth. Hopefully bestowing them with good luck and fortune.
With today's lanterns, many people use them in their celebrations. Lighting a lantern was seen as a way of letting the wind take your worries away from you. This single act was seen as a positive influence and bode well in the family. Lots of different cultures throughout the world believe that the burning of your worries helps the mind come to terms with it and leave it in a more relaxed and calm state.
