Breathing. It's an instant body function that almost all of us not consider; many people don't even realize how it works. It's essential to life, and our bodies just do it. If you're a singer, though, you need to think about it and understand how it works. Good strong breath support tends to make the difference between an average singer and a good one.
The biggest trouble most singers have with breathing is running out of air eventually of a long passage. The answer is to learn to control the rate of your breathing.
Proper breathing for good singing is a test because you have to learn to premeditated control muscles you have possibly never thought about before, and may not have even known you had! Even singers with many years of training (teachers too!) carry on to work on their breathing in every lesson and practice session.
To breathe effectively for singing you first need to sit or stand with great posture. Good posture is erect yet relaxed, with the chest elevated and the shoulders back, though not uncompromising like a soldier standing at attention.
Take in another deep breath; both of your hands should be pushed outward and you should feel development around your entire midsection. Your chest and shoulders should not advent or move considerably at all.
Now that you're mindful of your breathing muscles and can consume a good deep inhalation, it's the time to learn to control your rate of exhalation. The finest exercise for controlling rate of exhalation is the Fontanelli exercise (named for the person who invented it).
You breathe in and out to a stable count: inhale-2-3-4-exhale-2-3-4. Gradually increase the count. When you can easily do that to 7 or 8, add a hold phase: in-2-3-4-hold-2-3-4-out-2-3-4. Of course, slowly increase the count. Watch yourself in a mirror to make sure you attain and maintain good expansion.
Breathing exercises aren't the nearly all fun thing you'll do as a singer. But they are essential if you want to be a good one.
