For many years, the problem of right dress attire in learning institutions has constantly been debated. Most public schools do not insist on this, but their private counterparts do. There are, however, merits and demerits of private schools uniforms.
First, let us mention the advantages. Acquiring a strict dress code in a learning institution will improve student equality and self-esteem. Students will feel like they are part of a community, and this raises their self-esteem. When pupils experience equality, they are really less likely group themselves. As a result of this, formation of gangs in the institutions decrease.
Another advantage is increased discipline within the learning facility. Most people argue that the presence of a strict dress code serve as a constant reminder of the rules in an institution. Studies have shown that the presence of a dress code prevents gang members from wearing their gang colors to school, leading to a significant decrease in the number gang related activities.
Reduced peer pressure is also another merit of having a dress code in schools. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is reduced when the dress code is the same. In institutions where this is not endorsed, students are pressured to wear clothes that are in fashion. Failure to do so may cause one to be alienated and bullied.
On the demerits, their cost of is the leading one. Many people will argue the cost is significantly lower than buying most outfits, especially designer outfits. While this may be true, we are not looking at the cost of uniforms alone. Students will still want to wear normal clothes outside school, meaning parents will have to buy normal clothes and school attire as well. The added expense is what discourages most parents.
Another important disadvantage is the limited student individuality that comes about when wearing private schools uniforms. Students usually express themselves through the clothes they wear. If deprive them of this, then we will be hindering their individual development.
