The So-Called PC Repair - Rub Out and Reinstall
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
This problem in the PC repair sector places near near the top of my frustration list of practices by some Computer repair technicians. I am referring to the pattern of a couple of amateurish Desktop Computer repair "Gurus", and even a couple of big company franchises, taking the easy way out to fix a Computer by telling the customer that they have no alternative but to replace the hard drive and Re-image everything.
Hi, I am Bill Arnoldi, proprietor of FireBall Tech Computer Repair in Tucson, Arizona. In my mind, I am still seeking to figure out how someone can call formatting and reimaging a "fix" for any PC Computer repair problem. On my list of redresses, that is my final resort. Mostly it rather leaves me feeling a bit defeated. But, as I rarely have to ever resort to that, I think only three or four times in the last eighteen years, it is not a big matter for me.
So why do so many Computer repair technicians find it so easy to resort to demolishing the client's data and formating their hard drive as an answer to a PC Computer repair problem? Here are a few of the rationalities.
1. They in truth do not know how to remedy the problem. This is the number one cause. Most of the time this is the approach most often used by "Gurus" that have next to no experience in actually troubleshooting and fixing Desktop Computers, you acknowledge who they are. Its the individual, frequently hardly out of high school, that grew up fiddling with desktop computers and constructed their own gaming system so he thinks they are good at fixing PC computers, or the individual that studied on their own and went forward to get a certificate because they go most of the questions right on a piece of paper. Any way it goes, they just don't have the experience and this is their sole resolution to a somewhat tough problem. What is even worse is they are taking advantage of the client that is trusting their "expert" decision that this is the SOLE resolution to their trouble, oftentimes leaving the customer with a feeling of regret for not having backed up all their information, documents and movies and losing them as a result of the Re-image.
2. The faster the fix, the more money they can make. It takes more effort and time to troubleshoot and try repair paths on a PC Computer with involved problems. Often a client is looking for the best price for the PC fix. In order to remain competitive and preserve a volume of business, a Computer repair company may resort to the format and re-image of a Computer as it takes significantly less time than actually solving the matter. Thus, they can make a lot more money by considering the speediest route to getting the PC Computer up and going again. Again this is not ordinarily in the client's best interest because they end up more often than not losing their information and needing to Restore all of their software programs on their own.
3. Laziness. This represents a fragment of both of the preceding plus a poor attitude, but is in truth self-explanatory. The PC tech or the company doctrine is to take the easy way out, avoid possible complications, get the Computer out the door remedied, and do so with the smallest amount of effort, time and expense. It is a "repair mill" mentality. In general, they just don't worry about the consumer. Rather, it is all about whatsoever is simplest and most gainful. Again, the consumer becomes an uninformed victim of amateurish business mental attitudes and practices.
A comment response by a self-announced Computer repair guru on a forum posting by some other newbie tech asking "What's a good turnaround time on Desktop Computer fix for customers?" read the following: "It really counts on patronage, If you want to do this in a full time extent, you should be able to do this in about 8 to 12 hours. If you just reimage the Desktop Computer it shouldn't take more than 2 hours." I guess we know how he works.
A responsible technician can conclude nearly any problem without resorting to formatting a hard drive and re-imaging the OS, also referred to as reimaging a Computer. A tech with a genuine concern for the customer's best interest will use everything in their arsenal to fix a problem before resorting to a complete reimaging of a Computer system.
In my own Tucson Desktop Computer repair company, I can site a lot of examples wherein a customer brought a PC to me because they were told by another Desktop Computer repair individual that it was inevitable to reimage the customer's PC resulting in total loss of their information, only to find that indeed, it could be fixed without any loss. Yes, sometimes it costs more than reimaging a system because of the longer repair procedures, but the customer more frequently than not would rather pay a little more than lose all their information, and all too often, their treasured libraries of family memories on the PC in digital pictures.
My advice to consumers is to inquire around and check the reputation of the PC repair tech. Don't be unguarded and easily accept a PC Computer repair technician's assertion that a total wipe and Restore of the hard drive is needed. Drill them on the rationalities why it is needed, and what the alternatives are. At the very least, always tell a PC repair individual or company that they should reach you for authorization prior to wiping your hard drive and reimaging your Desktop Computer. Be mindful as well, that some of the nationwide franchise operations use a business model wherein a series of mandated stripped-down troubleshooting steps are set about before the company policy dictates a total Re-image of the Desktop Computer is requisite for problem resolution.
