Fast transfer rates can be obtained with the newer version of some cards. Eight hundred million bytes per second or thirty frames per second are a possible rate.
Now it doesn't take a professional technician to install a PC card but if an individual feels like this is beyond their computer skills or if all the slots are full then an external device may be the answer to this interface problem. That person may choose to purchase an external firewire component or a USB 2.0 device.
If an individual opts for an external device, it will require its own power source. They also are the usual choice in a classroom situation, because they are portable and can be accessed by multiple computers, sometimes simultaneously and other times one at a time.
Some external analog to digital converters, have only one type of connection. Others have multiple types of inputs and outputs. Some have several or all of the following: midi ports, RCA and/or quarter inch or mini plugs and some have XLR input for recording directly to the computer with a microphone.
One other piece of equipment is needed to complete a transfer of data. This inexpensive equipment is called an interface. It comes in the form of a cable with two different ends. Cameras often take a four-pin connection, while most, not all computers require a six-pin connection, so this cable has both.
When purchasing firewire video capture devices, be sure to choose a compatible device for the computer and camera that will be used. An individual can choose an external machine or an internal PCI card. It is simple, choose the correct software for the application and make great videos.
