Getting the Best Ink
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Choosing the right ink for your printer is much easier than most purchasing choices we have to make. There are only two main options, the first being to buy original cartridges – manufactured by the printer manufacturers themselves – and the second being to buy compatible ink cartridges.
The confusion comes when working out exactly what compatible ink cartridges are. In simple terms, they are cartridges manufactured elsewhere, not specifically designed by the people who made the printer. The result is that what is advertised as a compatible cartridge could have been designed after months of intensive work, or a few seconds of chucking some ink into a relatively correctly shaped bit of plastic.
Cheap, poor quality compatibles flooded the UK market from abroad a few years back, providing terrible quality and numerous problems. This, naturally, gave compatibles a bad name. They often used the exact same ink for numerous makes and models which could even end up damaging the printers. Each printer will need its own specific mix of ink to create the right quality colours.
The spectrum of compatible cartridges is vast. While many are such poor quality that they can be harmful, many others are as good – or in a few cases in even better – than the originals. These high-quality compatibles can cost up to half as much as the originals, and in the best cases may even be made from recycled plastics, reducing any harm to the environment. However, buying your printer cartridges from market stalls and the like will almost always be a mistake. Stick to proven online retailers.
So despite what you may have heard about compatibles being a bad idea, by shopping around and choosing reputable, ethical companies, you may find that not only do you save money, but you may even be gaining quality too.
