How to Succeed In Retail Apprenticeships

Retail therapy - where would we be without it? But it might not be as therapeutic if it weren't for all those hard-working people in the retail industry answering questions we may have about products, helping us choose the most suitable ones for us... and even accepting payment for them. One route into this industry, where you would learn to do all this - and more, is through a Retail Apprenticeship.
According to the British Retail Consortium, almost 3 million people work in retail in the UK, and retail sales account for a colossal 10 per cent of the UK economy. It's clearly a huge industry which a lot of people's livelihoods depend on. The Retail apprenticeship covers a wide range of skills which are needed across the entire sector. Your apprentice job would depend on your employer, but could involve things like helping customers find the products they're looking for, giving them specialist advice on products and handling their purchases at the checkout. As retail apprenticeships go, this is the nuts and bolts of the industry.
A more business focused retail apprenticeship would be the Purchasing and Supply Management course, focusing on the principles behind the supply chain and how goods get from the supplier to the customer. Logistics behind the supply chain are essential to the retail industry, whether it's getting components from a factory in China to the electronics shop on the high street, or transporting cauliflowers from the farm down the road to your local supermarket.
If you have a passion for cars, motorcycles... or, indeed any kind of vehicle, then you might want to look into the Retail Motor Industry: Vehicle Sales apprenticeship. This would train you to help people make possibly the second-biggest purchase in their life - after the home they live in. As a car salesperson, you need a great deal of specialist knowledge and the ability to negotiate to help the customer make the best choice of vehicle for their needs. An apprenticeship like this will teach you how it's done, but generally speaking, it's better suited for somebody aged 21 or over.
Talking of large purchases, retail apprenticeships don't get much bigger (in terms of purchases) than the Property Services course. On this apprenticeship, you'll be learning how estate agents and lettings agents help people who are in the market for a new home or business property. As an apprentice you'll likely begin in a customer services role in an estate or lettings agency's office.
