As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world it is not a surprise that the tourism and hospitality industry are two of the main employers throughout Australia. The hospitality industry employs tens of thousands of workers and most of these are University students looking for extra cash. There are however a variety of full time positions available for people who want to make a full time career out of hospitality. These jobs are mainly focused on the areas of bar, restaurant, gaming and wagering services.
A popular industry in Australia is the gaming industry. This industry involves "pokie" machines which are very similar to the traditional fruit machines and are located in most of the pubs and clubs. Anywhere between 20 and 100 machines can be located in a pub and these machines are looked after by fully qualified staff who attend to, refill and payout any wins on the machines on a regular basis.
The gaming industry in Australia is incredibly popular and therefore is a huge employer. Qualified gaming staff are often hard to come by as the accreditation is not always easy to get. In order to qualify for a gaming license you need to pass a credit check and have your fingerprints taken by the relevant authorities. You then need to answer a questionnaire and attend several training courses before you are able to commence work.
Once you have completed your application you will then need to undergo a range of on the job training and this can involved two to three months of real time work before you are at a level where you can be left to work independently with the machines. To reach a higher level such as a supervisor or managerial position it can take several years of experience to understand the full workings of the machines.
Some of the tasks required of gaming workers including clearing cash and coins out of the machines and counting them, clearing note jams and coin jams in the machines in addition to fixing any small errors that do not require the services of a technician.
