Most are four-wheel models, with back wheels that are bigger than the ones in front. Sit on mowers that feature "zero degree" turning capability will often have additional side wheels to give the machine added flexibility to complete these maneuvers. Sit on lawn mowers may be powered by diesel or gas.
Educating yourself on riding lawn mower safety should be done before starting the engine. Before beginning, survey the lawn and remove any rocks, toys, and other large objects. If you happen to run over any objects, injuries or damages could happen since it will be sent flying in an unknown direction. It is also important that children and pets not be in the area when the lawn mower is in use.
Sit on mowers are similar to automobiles, and most models are started with a key. Before the key can turn in the ignition, the mower usually must be in a neutral gear with the blades disengaged. Only after starting the engine do you engage the blades. You can also adjust the height of the blades, depending on how tall or short you wish to cut the grass.
Once you're ready to start mowing, hit the brake and put the model in drive, then slowly lift your foot from the break to start moving forward. How you proceed is up to you, but many people like to outline the perimeter and move inward; others prefer to mow in straight rows. It's entirely your choice, but you'll find that some methods are quicker than others.
When mowing, there is even more safety issues to keep in mind. Never leave the riding mower running unattended, even if you are just jumping off to move a rock or tree limb. Most models come with a safety feature that will kill the engine if you lift your weight off the seat for just a moment. If this doesn't happen on your sit on mower, however, you should turn it off before getting off.
You should also exercise caution when mowing a steep slope. Ride on mowers, obviously, are vastly heavier than push mowers and can therefore be in danger of tipping over. Rather than mowing from side to side, you should mow steep slopes in an up and down pattern.
