Revitalizing a Community
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Many towns and cities have faced a time where revitalization was necessary to restore pride and economic activity in their community. Architects, in particular, play a key role in this revitalization process. For instance, designing “sustainable” buildings can have a positive affect on the environment, and can help lower utility costs. Similarly, restoring a town’s historical landmarks can help stimulate the local economy by raising employment, and increasing the beauty of a town can help raise tourism. Architects play an important professional role in these steps toward community renewal.
Small towns and large metropolitan often face similar problems. One concern almost every area faces is overcrowding in both industrial and residential areas. Architects can prove helpful in the design of additional areas for businesses and housing. A properly trained architect can create structures that utilize space and modern design. By designing a structure that makes the most of the plot provided, a town can dramatically increase space without constructing a large number of new buildings.
Not only can architects design space-efficient structures, they can also design “sustainable” buildings. Sustainable buildings are designed to use less water, energy, and raw materials. Architects are more concerned than ever in practicing green construction. During the design of sustainable buildings, strategies like passive design are used in order to capitalize on natural light and increase energy performance. This is one way that the employment of an architect in the revitalization of a town or city is not only advantageous to the city, but to the environment as well.
Despite the inherently positive affects revitalization efforts can make on an area, there are those who fear these efforts will result in lost pieces of history. However, an architect can assist in the preservation of historical buildings, and can update them to be safer and more comfortable without altering historically important qualities of the structure. Preservation and restoration, two steps key to revitalizing an area without losing its history, require a knowledgeable and capable architecture firm.
Architects in New York have played an integral part in making New York City the successful tourist attraction that it is today. Architects in NYC have designed beautiful landmarks that draw thousands of sightseers every year. Structures like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty help generate large amounts of revenue by attracting tourists. The creation of beautiful buildings and monuments raises tourism, but it is not the only way that employing an architect to assist in the restoration of a community can help stimulate the economy.
All of the restorative efforts taken by an architect require the employment of others. When an architectural firm is hired, a multitude of other workers are often employed. For example, architects in Pennsylvania—more specifically architects in Lancaster, PA—designed the Lancaster County Convention Center. This facility employed a large number of people since the day its idea was put forth. Architects were employed to design it, construction workers hired to build it, decorators brought in to furnish it, and a full staff was needed to run it once finished. Indeed, revitalization that requires an architect may raise local employment levels across a number of job sectors.
Architects are an integral part of revitalization efforts within a community. While many people may not understand the potentially positive outcomes these professionals have on a community, they are helpful in the renewal of a city or town. Architects are useful in many ways, and can help with everything from more efficiently using space and resources to assisting in the preservation of a city, and potentially stimulating the economy.
