Short Overview of the Amish Acres Craft Show

On its heart stopping 47th year, the Amish Acres Arts and Crafts Festival is now ranked among the 20 Best Classic and Contemporary craft Shows in all the States. It is always held in the first weekend of August; last year, it went from July 31st through August 3rd. On average, it features around 350 craftspeople in a marketplace that is located all around the farm's pond.
The event features around 12 different categories for artists to join in, and with a total of over $10,000 to be awarded as cash prizes to the winners of the show. Luck was not on my side at the time, and I did not win any major prizes, but it was okay. I was able to sell enough of my items, and it's always a bonus to be able to talk to the crowds there.
The festival was started way back in 1962 near the Pletcher Furniture Village in downtown Nappanee. It was originally part of the sidewalk days celebration. During that time, watercolors painted by local kids in the park department's summer arts program are hung on clotheslines between the pillars of the store. What started out as a simple activity somehow began to spread as to include various craftspeople and other artists. The Pletcher family founded the Amish Acres a few years after, and eventually the new festival was moved to the farm in 1971.
After that quick history lesson, let's get back to what happened at the festival, shall we? I went there with a few of my friends in tow (you tend to make a few after meeting them in various shows), and as expected, the Amish Acres did not let me down. Due to the recession, I think, the sales themselves were not as good as the previous years. But they were enough. Fortunately, this is not my primary source of income.
