What is PMP? PMP stands for Project Management Professional, an accreditation issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Project Management Institute is a world-wide professional organization with over half a million members in almost 200 countries. They currently have 260 geographic chapters and are rapidly growing. Project Management Institute offers different professional credentials, of which the PMP is one of the most popular and most well respected.
As our nation and indeed the world, struggles with unstable economies and frequent job cuts, now is the perfect time to sharpen your skills and make yourself more marketable and more valuable to employers. Asking, "What is PMP?" is a good first step to building a better and more secure future for yourself, but be cautioned because the exam is no piece of cake.
The PMP certification examination is based upon the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK), a guide to project management. The Project Management Body of Knowledge organizes its information into nine knowledge areas and five process groups. The four hour examination of two hundred questions is designed to test your knowledge of the contents of the Project Management Body of Knowledge as well as your managerial skills and business ethics. Many people have tried this test and failed on the first try, because it is much more difficult than they prepare for, but don't let that scare you off. It just means that asking "What is PMP?" is not enough. You need to take your studies seriously.
There are many resources available to people wanting to earn a project management certification. The best source, of course, is the Project Management Body of Knowledge itself. Reading this manual more than once is a wise idea. There is also no shortage of PMP certification prep classes that you can take either online or in person. Take your question, "What is PMP?" to your local chapter of the Project Management Institute and ask if they can recommend a good prep class for you to attend.
There are also dozens if not hundreds of PMP study guides written to help you study, podcasts, videos and some websites offer a free practice PMP certification examination to help you get the feel for what to expect on the exam. These resources answer much more than, "What is PMP?"
Although becoming a certified project management professional will not necessarily make you a good project manager, studies show that project managers holding a PMP certification earn 15-30% more than those who do not. And if you have been searching the job boards lately, you already know that a PMP certification is highly preferred by hiring companies. Passing the PMP certification examination may not make you a good project manager, but it will certainly prove to prospective employers that you have worked hard to acquire a vast body of knowledge that is now at your (and hopefully their) disposal. If employers ask you, "What is PMP?", you will have the best answer.
