Leaders should understand the capabilities of each of their followers and should delegate work accordingly. A leader's direction and end should be clear to team else the team would get no where, taking a big hit to its confidence.
It doesn't have to be stated that leaders are very good communicators. Nevertheless it shouldn't be forgotten that effective communication is learn't and is not innate. For a person to communicate well, he should know what know what he is talking about.
A leader should be level headed and trustworthy. Trust is difficult to build but it is even more difficult to maintain and garner respect.
