How To Start A Vending Business
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Many people are looking for ways to earn a little extra money. If this is you, perhaps you should consider starting a vending machine business. Just make sure you get your business set up properly.
Keep Your Initial Investment Low
This applies to a lot of business, but for a vending machine business you truly want to start slow. It can be tempting to run right out and get a dozen machines so you'll start making more money faster. But it's best to avoid this temptation. Get a couple of machines and get a feel for what the business is like. If you decide it's not for you, it will be easier to exit. You can sell you machines and your losses will be minimal.
Understand All The Costs
True buying vending machines is not overly expensive, but you'll have more expenses than just the machines. Naturally you have to buy the product to put in the machines. Obviously you won't make any money if you don't have something to sell. And remember that machines need maintenance, and they'll occasionally break. You'll need to pair for repairs as well. And nobody will let you put a machine on their property for no charge. You'll have to pay the property owner as well.
Location Means Everything
If you want your vending machine business to be successful, you'll have to place the machines where the people are. This is not as easy as it sounds. Sure large business and school campuses would be great, but most places like that will work with large vending services. Chances are you won't get that lucky starting out, but it's something to strive for down the road once you are established. Instead, look for places that have a lot of foot traffic. And look for places where people generally have to stand around and wait for something. Avoid being right next to a store or restaurant that sells the same items you are stocking. And depending on what you are vending, you may need an electrical outlet close by.
Provide Good Service
Don't get lazy here. Too many people who decide to start a vending business fail to keep up with the machines. Sometimes they'll neglect to change the product tags, sometimes they'll forget to collect the money so customers can't buy anything, and sometimes, in really bad cases, they'll forget to keep the machines stocked with product. As we said earlier, no product means no income.
One reason people let the service slide is that they don't see the initial profits they had hoped for. Then the service slides and you have absolutely no chance for success. Machines will often start slow until more people become aware that they are there. If you stick with it things will pick up. Once you start showing a profit, you can take that profit and invest in more machines in new locations.
