Seven Tips For Choosing The Right Online Business Opportunity
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you've been searching for a business opportunity, or you're already involved in some type of multi-level, direct sales, and/or network marketing opportunity, you probably realize that some of them are NOT all they're hyped up to be. There's lots of hype to go around. I know this to be the case - over the past fewyears I've been involved with several myself. But in reality, it's not entirely up to the opportunity, now is it? I'll cover more of that in a few, but I want to share with you what I believe to be the best 7 tips that I've used to pick the RIGHT company. And I know this will help you if you plan to have a future with ANY opportunity.
Since there are literally hundreds of choices available when it comes to companies, it's always a nice idea to know what you're getting into beforehand. Some companies require a substantial up-front investment just to get going; if you're a little uneasy about forking over the cash before you know the full details, then it's time to do some research.
Tip #1 - How Long Has The Company Been In Business?
Are you asking this question? While a lot of people love the idea of getting started with a 'ground floor' opportunity, in reality it's probably not the greatest idea. There are many companies that fail every single year. Why waste time, putting forth your effort, to build an opportunity on something that may soon meet its demise? I would suggest that a minimum requirement for any opportunity would be that it's been in business at least five years. This doesn't guarantee anything, but the chances for survival are far greater.
Besides, what's it going to hurt to wait a little while? Getting in on a 'ground floor opportunity' doesn't necessarily give you any real advantage, especially with a network marketing opportunity, since the bulk of your success is dependent on YOU.
Tip #2 - Is the product or service unique?
Does this look like a copycat business? We get used to recurring themes as they show up in business, entertainment, etc. For example, you'll see a movie about a certain subject, and then sure enough every other studio in Hollywood copies that theme and makes their own version. Nothing ever seems to sell quite like the original.
It's basically the same in business - nothing is quite like the original...and typically not as profitable. If you're looking for 'the' business, you'll want to find something that's original, but not too out of the ordinary. Something that seems to make sense on its own, but that you'd think, "wow, I should have thought of that!"
Tip #3 - Is There A Need For The Product?
Lots of times when you come across a new opportunity, service or product, it's what many would consider to be a luxury expense, and not something that's needed. Time-shares, silver and gold coins, juices, exercise enhancers, and the list goes on - these are ideas that look good in the beginning, but unless you start making money with the company (and fast!) the expenses and the idea itself might become burdensome just as fast.
For the best success in any company it'll be a good idea to pick one that offers a product or service that adds decent value, that you can use regularly, and that can boast on its own as being useful and needed. A nice test is to see if there's already cash in your budget for something that you utilize, that can be diverted to the product or service.
Tip #4 - Is The Product Or Service Trendy (A Fad)?
Is it a new craze or just new to the market? Going back to what I touched on earlier, a company with some originality would be a better option. Again, not too unique, which may seem peculiar or just plain odd, but something that you don't see going away anytime soon.
Tip #5 - Can You Generate Immediate Income With The Company?
This is really getting down to the heart of the matter, now isn't it? We all want to be able to make lost of cash, but with some opportunities it takes some real momentum before you'll see any return. High dollar products are great for commission-based earnings, but understand the sales will generally be fewer and farther between - unless you have an great sales experience advantage, then you may have it easier than the rest of us.
Getting a near immediate return is critical for the success of any new distributor. Who wants to drag it out for years? One way to do this is to find a product or service (that makes sense so far) and that has a nice, mid-rangeprice. By that I mean maybe $100-$250 to get started. This will usually provide enough of a commission to you, based on the company's comp plan, to make it quickly pick up momentum and cover your costs while you're at it.
Tip #6 - Is There Leadership In Place That's Committed To YOUR Success?
Do you plan to go at it alone? I certainly hope not. Maybe someone introduced you to the business or maybe you stumbled across it on your own. At any rate, your best bet is going to be to find someone who is actually successful with the opportunity and choose to join with them and learn what they're doing. Look for someone who can offer a training system or at least guide you in the right direction.
The other side of this, of course, is that your success is actually dependent on YOU, and not someone else. Once you make that decision, the rest will work itself out. But it helps tremendously to have a guide that can encourage you. I remember the day I made the decision that I was going to be successful, and it began to change the way I approached things. It added confidence to my efforts. Once I got plugged in to a training system, it only magnified the momentum I had already attainted.
Tip #7 - Does It Look Like Something That's FUN?
Don't you want to do something you really enjoy? It may be an afterthought for some, but think about it: are you planning on having fun with your business? Are you going to approach your business with an intentional, upbeat determination? When I used to consider a home based business or a network marketing opportunity, I often thought of it from the perspective of being just another job. Well, it can be if you want, but believe me if you make it your own, and add your personality to the mix, you can actually make it delightful!
So in the future when you're considering a business opportunity, give some thought to these tips here and put some research into the opportunity that you're thinking about joining up with. It will go a long way toward making the choice much easier!
