Website Flipping Statistics Show Startups Still Selling
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you are part of the website flipping community, then you most likely are aware that there is a divided opinion on how lucrative creating startup websites are. In case you are new to website flipping, the word "startups" is meant to define newly-built websites that have zero revenue and have little or no traffic at all.
A group of marketers are of the opinion that startups are slowly dying and have no place in the business. Before, startups were a big hit with buyers, and were snapped up in a flash, but it isn't the same now.
On the other hand, some internet marketers claim that building startups and then selling them is still an effective way to earning a living online. They say, many individuals have found financial success just by creating and designing websites.
So, the only way to find out which side is right is by gathering the facts. Here is some statistics sourced from Flippa.com. Again, if you are new to the website flipping niche, Flippa.com is the most widely-used and largest place in the flipping market to do business.
You can find below the figures on websites which had zero revenue and no traffic and were put up for sale in November 2009 until the present.
There have been 5,260 websites listed since November 2009 and of this number, 3,426 got sold off. Percentage-wise, this translates to 65% of the websites being sold. That's something taking into account that Flippa's total sales is only about 55%.
It was easy to come up with the percentage, but to be able to get the precise median and average price, an elaborate cut and paste process of the websites' figures would have had to be performed. So for the sake of time, 800 sample sales data was compiled and here are the findings: the average price of a startup website over the 7-month time period is $130 and the median price is $100. Many of the sales were between $100 and $200.
During this research it was noted that it it's not impossible to make more than a couple of hundred bucks from a startup website. To provide an example, a ClickBank ready site, eMillionaireBluePrint.com, sold for $1,800. Other huge paydays include AttorneyGuideSite.com and PhoenixForexCode.com which sold for $1,997 and $2,900 respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, some websites slumped at lower prices than what Flippa charges for a listing, with some even plummeting to a buck apiece!
So after taking a closer look at the data behind startup websites, it is apparent that buying them isn't as popular as it was before, but the business still has promise and shouldn't be left in the dust.
