What Are Virtual Leased Lines?

Go to: Previous Article Next Article

The world of information technology is expanding at an enormous rate, providing new innovative solutions to almost all the problems. Virtual leased lines are such an innovative solution, which solved the problem of massive communication between offices located at distant locations. Globalisation of modern industries required high speed data transfer connections, which are provided by virtual leased lines.

Due to technological advancements virtual leased lines have become obsolete, as they are being replaced by Digital Subscriber Line, DSL lines and Metro Ethernet Network.

Users have to pay the rental fee once in a year, whereas no connectivity charges have to be paid. As compared to ADSL and SDSL, leased lines are much more costly. Due to 24 hours services and support, they are still availed by many people, and businesses when it comes to effective communication in order to operate business effectively.

In a leased line however, there is no sharing and each individual can get the maximum bandwidth, for which he/she applied. On the other hand, the positive aspect is that the virtual leased line is cheaper than the leased line, and is more affordable for the single user.

The virtual leased line splits it services between two sites, i.e., the consumer, and the internet service provider. The service provider site consists of two DSLAMs, and for the transmission and receiving of data it is equipped with two ATM switches. The ATM switches are responsible mainly for maintaining, and transferring data between the user site, and that of the service provider.

Bandwidth for leased lines is highly flexible, and starting from 2Mb, it can go as high as 155Mb or even higher in some cases, thus, providing guaranteed high speed data transfer. For large organisations, leased lines are the best mode for internet access because due to high speed data transfer, several users can use the internet at the same time, without experiencing any lags or slowdowns in transfer speeds.

Many factors of the virtual leased line are inferior to the leased line. For instance, as there are multiple users for any given connection, the privacy and security is not as flawless as in the ordinary leased line. Other users might be able to access your data, so there is a security risk, and you have to be vigilant when using this network.

Virtual Leased lines are available in 64 Kbits per second to 2 MB. However, along with 64 kb different increments are being offered, which can be availed by the customers according to their requirements. In some countries, low speed lines are offered, which are 56 Kbits and lower, high-speed leased lines are also provided if demanded by any customer. Such lines are widely used by developing countries for the interaction of the business network.
