When many people think of lean manufacturing, they presume that it means doing with less than you need to get the job done. But what it actually is trying to achieve is getting more with less. It is not about taking shortcuts and doing the job half way, it is about cutting out the waste and still getting the job done right.
It does not matter what you do, anything at work or at home in your everyday life, there is sure to be waste in the process. Waste can be defined as anything that is not directly required to do the job. It may take the form of wasted movements, having to walk to far from your workstation to get the next part you need.
It could also be wasted handling, having to move a product multiple times in order to accomplish a task. It could be having too much inventory and having to pay to store it all or work around it because you are afraid that you are going to run out of something. And what all of these other wastes have in common is that because they are so inefficient, you have waste in your labor costs because people are standing around waiting to move things or are moving things too many time or can't find something because of the mess. These are some easily identifiable waste that are the low hanging fruit and easy to pick off. But once you clear away the easy to see things, you can go after the more complicated matters like your shipping process or the supply line.
These are incredibly complex process that encompasses several departments and many workers. They must be identified and a clear objective to set up. They also need lots of effort and monitoring. What is making changes if you can not follow through on the process and then monitor progress?
This takes time and effort, and many individuals working together in order to get the job done. It takes planning and putting a team together from all the different areas of the business and with different objectives in mind. When people different come together to solve a problem and they all start from a different point of view, they come up with many different ideas to solve the same problem.
