Why do I need an ITIL course ?
ITIL is simply a framework for managing IT processes, to deliver business benefits, at it's most basic level. So how does a simple concept explain the plethora of ITIL courses available ? Is some kind of ITIL course or training really needed, to get a good appreciation f ITIL ? Well even though ITIL is not particularly complex, the real issue in terms of learning, is one of scope ITIL covers such a wide range of IT functions and responsibilities within a business, and it attempts to integrate and manage all the various functions. So if you think about a typical IT department in a large organization, and all the various roles and functions, then you may begin to see why a structured approach to ITIL learning, via an approved course, is necessary!
What ITIL courses are available ?
Well it depends on your background and needs. But the ITIL course that most people think of when they look at ITIL training, is the ITIL Foundation course. This is the basic conceptual training, and it attempts to give an overview of TIL and the various functional components and how they interact. It is a very valuable introduction to the ITIL world. There is a plethora of ITIL Foundation training courses available. You can chose to take a course in a number of ways. I did my ITIL Foundation with a UK company called QA. It was a five day course, with the exam on the last day.
This was a very effective way to get a thorough introduction to ITIL, and having the luxury of 5 days, it was not too onerous on the brain! The added benefit was having the luxury to focus on ITIL for a whole week, without the inevitable interruptions daily work. So if you can get your boss to agree a 5 day ITIL course then that's the way to go. The added benefit is that you will meet people from other companies, and have an opportunity to network.
Various vendors offer ITIL courses over three days, which is often billed as the 'fast-track' variant. It's the same course content and syllabus as the 5 day one, but condensed somewhat. Some vendors allocate a time to take the exam at the end of the three days training course. This is probably the way to go, as taking the exam while the material is fresh in your mind is a definite advantage.
If you look around online, you'll see a host of ITIL course vendors offering self-study material, often online and video based. This is a great method of training and quite suitable for the ITIL Foundation certification. It can be a cheap option, especially if you want to get a number of staff trained to ITIL Foundation level, as special site licenses are often available.
A word of caution here though, as online training material can be variable in terms of quality. I found that by going to specialised video sites, such as 'itilcourses.info' and looking at the many samples of training videos, you can often get a good feel for the quality of the actual ITIL course on offer. Many of the self-study courses, vendors include the exam fee in with the cost of the course, but this is something you need to check for.
Of course there are the a number of ITIL book on Amazon, if you really want to go out on a limb. I don't recommend this in terms of the actual ITIL Foundation exam, as the courses, whether classroom or online, have a clear structure and cover the syllabus carefully. However, if you are just interested in learning about ITIL, and not after an ITIL qualification, then there are some great books that cover all the main aspects of the ITIL Foundation course.
