There are a few different ways to set up a computer network. You can do it in your home or in an office. You can have it be wireless or wired. This will give you a basic explanation of computer network equipment and how it works.
You will need one main piece of equipment to link your computers together. For a wired network you will need a hub, switch, or a broadband router. Either of these will get your network up and running. However, they all work a little differently and are priced differently as well.
Most networks in our day will require internet connection as well. In order to get all your computers connected to the same internet network, you will need a network adapter specifically for internet. It is also called an Ethernet adapter. This adapter is needed when your network is run through a switch or a hub.
If you have set your network up with a router, you won't have to get a network adapter. The router will take on both roles and can actually connect even more networks. You will have to pay a little more for one, but if you need it it's worth the investment.
Connecting other networks through a router is actually quite simple. You will have your internet already hooked in as well as your main computer network. To add another network, all you need to do is connect a switch or hub to the router and that network will also have internet connection.
If your main network is set up with a hub, you need to be aware of some of its problems. A hub is the slowest of the options out there for network connection. It also jams easily when too much information is being passed through it. To avoid this, you will either want to decrease the amount of computers you have on your network or set up your network with a switch instead.
A switch will perform much quicker than a hub. It also doesn't get jammed the same way a hub does. It will cost more, but in the end will be worth the money.
When setting up a network you will need to decide on your connection port. There are benefits to all three so what you choose will depend on your personal situation. If money isn't an issue a wired router would be the best way to go.
