Success: Character And Integrity
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Achieving success will fall apart without character. You can make money without it--but it will be useless to you and others around you. It remains one of the most important of life's puzzles. Con artists and drug dealers may have money--but they have no character.
If you go to all the work of achieving success, you don't want to mar it with a lack of character that will make people pity you as you age and become less than you were intended to be.
Character equals integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing all the time, even when no one else is watching. You don't have anything to fear when your integrity is intact, because you have nothing to hide. You experience no guilt and no fear. And without those two traveling companions, it's much easier to climb higher and farther, faster!
To put it in practical terms--You will put the golden rule into work at all times. Some people will step on other people to get what they want; climbing the corporate ladder on the shoulders of others. With character and integrity, you will treat people with respect and dignity. You will treat others in the way that you expect to be treated.
When you are the model of "doing the right thing" in the office, it isn't always appreciated by your peers. There might be a chance that you are the only one that is doing the right thing. If that's the case, you will find yourself graduating to better places where your integrity may be appreciated.
If you have character, you will realize that the most important things in life are not at the office or at work. Family and responsibility to that family are most important. Having character means you will not sacrifice them to "finish this project" or "get that done". When your child asks you to play catch, you won't say; "Maybe next time".
Your character will shine through as you put your family before your work, as you purposefully schedule time with them (and then keep those appointments you put in your planner), as you "date" your spouse and remember why it is you got married in the first place, and as you set an example that your spouse and children can be proud of.
As you consider character, it's most important to remember that your children will grow up to be just like you. As said once by John Maxwell: "We teach what we know: we reproduce who we are". Having a life full of integrity and character will make you reproduce the same traits in your children as you climb the ladder to success. And isn't that really what it's all about ??
