Alarm management is necessary in a process manufacturing environment, where an operator controls the process sitting in a control room. As we know a human being can do a particular job at a time and can handle a limited number of things at a time, there is the need of alarm to alert the operator, usually when the plant or the machine is upset or in an unusual condition.
It pulls the operator’s attention at the time of most important problem upon which he or she needs to act upon. As the complexity and size of manufacturing system is increasing, the importance of alarm management has grown more and more. The methods of industrial security system are quite different. The industrial alarm systems are designed by engineers with the use of several sensor systems.
There are a number of fence mounted sensor and also buried perimeter sensor which can be used on the top of the wall or can be buried underground for detection. There are other sensors like infrared sensors, microwave sensors, smart locks and magnetic door sensors for alarm tracking and billing.
Sometimes alarm can blame the operator, but it is better for engineers and engineering managers to improve the alarm management software. The operator will find his job easy by the developed alarm management software, which can review faster about the unexpected incidents, improve process control and can give more efficient maintenance. Any false alarm may cause uncompensated costs to a company or community.
According to a survey, it is calculated that there are around 36 million alarm activations in the world, and among them about 94 to 98 percent are false. The number of false alarms is increasing continuously with a steady increase of commercial and residential alarm systems. There are associations like National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), False Alarm Reduction Association (FARS), for false alarm reduction, which are committed to reduce false alarms and related costs in their jurisdictions.
They serve as a clearinghouse for companies; they seek to reduce false alarms, and to promote an environment of cooperation among others. Many law enforcement and alarm industries are also working together to reduce nuisance false alarms and recover costs.
It has been felt by everybody that an alarm can bring safety and a peace of mind if it is properly installed, maintained. A careless use, install and maintenance can cause a major problem for a consumer and the society. Therefore, it is imperative for a consumer to think for a while before buying and installing an alarm system.
