No one likes to be harassed at the check-out counter of the local store, particularly when they have some kids in tow. So try to avoid annoying people as this also defeats the objective.
Supermarkets play it safe when displaying this kind of box and usually put them on the customer service desk for when people are relaxed when entering the store. Here, they normally have a little time to browse events so if this advert is in the public interest, see if the supermarket will allow 'foreign' adverts. If it is for a good cause they usually give some allowances.
Finally, printers will make up these boxes in all kinds of designs and colors depending on what is needed. Get them to offer suggestions on what to have on the box, if there is a need to put something there, and allow them to guide you on what is popular at the moment. If the advert is to occur again in nature, these companies may offer a discount for a larger order so contemplate how many will be needed over the next year or so. This is a great way to cut down on the advertising budget for sure.
