As we all know, there is such a thing as the 'minimum' to preventive maintenance, such as a motor oil change to ensure its survival. When it comes to vehicle maintenance the question is how little is too little and how much is too much?
So I have to ask, when you read following questions... is this you?
Are you afraid to let your vehicle be handled by anyone else, in fear of some error taking place that may lead to extraordinary damage?
When that puff of blue smoke that is coughed up by your tailpipe catches your attention are you instantly thinking "damn, piston ring wear is taking a toll on my engine and I'm burning my precious expensive oil, not to mention the cost of major engine repairs?
Do you ever wonder if your spouse is motoring around town, running errands or what not, with the engine/oil light warning her from the dash, but figure he/she may keep tooling about figuring all is well until the engine actually quits on them? (Just for fun, you may want to pose the question during dinner tonight asking whether or not they know what to do should that scene actually pop up in life...will you even have an engine to work with anymore?)
If you ever let someone else change your oil, have you sensed that they could really mess things up and not add the proper amount of oil, be it too much or too less? You'll either see your engine foaming or notice that your engine is hungry when you see the oil light come on while veering a corner.
If they (the 16 year old mechanic) get the oil level right then you worry about cross threading your motor oil drain pan plug or even worse... or worse they forget to put the oil plug on (your oil change could be catastrophic in about 5 minutes).
Aftermarket parts seem more than reasonable right now, however the quality is nearly invisible in comparison to OEM equipment (and who can afford that right now?).
Vehicles will outlive you, so long as you maintain them properly (and teach your offspring how to take care of yours when you're gone).
What if your oil were as clean and clear when it was drained as it was the moment it was put in?
And what about Mobil 1 Synthetic, Royal Purple or AMSOIL...are they you're top choices for engine performance and protection but you can't quite believe it yet?
Chances are that if you answered yes to one, or more, or all of these questions, then you are a certified preventive maintenance addict! Never forget that changing your oil and all of your filters is the number one priority for preventive maintenance.
