Scores of people begin to read the Bible with great desire. Lots of them have good intentions but only a few end up really making it a lifelong habit. Why does this happen? What is different about those people who end up making a real habit out of it? I believe the reasons are found in a couple of short steps that I will write about in this article.
To begin with, many people just don?t set aside the right amount of daily time to make a lifelong habit out of reading the Word. Lots of people show a strong desire to want to spend time with God in the Word, but just having a desire doesn?t do much. Countless people want to stick to a dieting plan, but very few can. For you to have a positive experience with your Bible reading, you have to be regular about it. I think setting aside about twenty minutes a day for a month is right to begin with.
Then, you need to get to a place to read where there are no distractions. turn off the TV, radio and get away from your computer. Clear out the noise and clutter. Seek a place where you can read the Bible without being disturbed.
Make sure you have a readable version of the Bible. Finding a modern English translation today isn't hard. The New International Version (NIV) or the New Living Translation (NLT) are both very good, easy to read translations. If you struggle to read the sentences you will find yourself comprehending less and less. This can be frustrating, so make sure you find a translation of the Bible that is easy to read.
Then, begin your reading of the Bible in a book that is easy to understand. You don't have to start your Bible reading in the beginning of the Bible. You can start in the Gospel of John, which is one of the easier books to comprehend.
It?s always nice to have something to write with and a notebook handy as you read. Jot down thoughts or questions that you have about the passage. This will help keep you reading without pondering too much over one question or thought. You can ask a Pastor or a mature believer your questions later.
Last, you must come to your time in the Word with a submissive heart. God gave us the Bible as a tool to change us. Having a heart of humility and acceptance in order to grow in your walk with God is the best way to read it. Before you begin, take a second and pray, asking God to help you comprehend what you are about to read so that it can change you. God loves this type of prayer and will answer you.
The Bible is the best resource for growing spiritually. Armed with these helpful tools, you can learn to apply and understand the riches of the entire Bible for yourself.
