Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Deciding if you should end a long term relationship is one of lifes harder decisions. If things are struggling, how long should you work at it? How do you know when to give up?
In some situations, the choice is obvious. Other times, things arent so clear cut and deciding whether to stay or go is a tough call.
It's normal for a relationship to go through stages. Some of the early excitement wears off as a couple settles into life together. Ideally a profound and enduring love replaces the initial excitement.
But not all relationships are successful. Some should end. The difficulty is knowing when and if.
Here are some things to consider if youre wondering if you should end your long term relationship.
Physical abuse is a non-starter for staying in a relationship. If you partner is abusive, end it. You may need to get outside help, but end it.
The following isnt as clear-cut as what to do if abuse is an issue, but these factors will give you some insight into the quality of your relationship.
Even if your relationship isnt thrilling right now, do you and you partner honestly like and respect each other? Do you have a common bond of good will to build on?
Are you both willing to make compromises to meet each others needs?
Are you expecting your partner to change some behaviors you find completely unacceptable? If so, it may mean it's time to move on.
Are you both willing to give and take together? Taking only isnt fair and wont work.
Can you imagine being happy with your partner long term? Do you like to talk about the future together?
If you consider those factors, I think youll get a sense of whether you need to consider ending your relationship. Most of the time, long term relationships are worth preserving.
The problem is that most people don't know how to rekindle their love.
These days its easier than its even been before to get excellent relationship advice and coaching. After all, lots of people have had relationship issues before you.
