If Being Different Is Weird, Be Weird - Aussie Grills
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
As with many grill companies, Aussie Grills were born from a metal fabrication shop that started operation in 1959. Metal Engineering Corporation (MECO), the shop in question, began making charcoal and electric grills in 1999. With their headquarters in Greeneville, Tenn., they've quickly become known in the market for their level of expertise in water smoker grills, as well as electric and charcoal grills.
When you are searching for that perfect grill, have a few things in mind as you go shopping:
* Where will you be using the grill?
* What will your fuel source be?
* How much room do you have?
* Do I want it to fit in with existing dcor or try a new style?
* What's your budget?
* Do you just need a plain Jane grill or is your ego in control?
* Look for a good balance between quality and cost
* BTU's aren't exactly everything, look at the overall picture.
Each of the Aussie grills made by MECO, Bushman, Bondi and Monaro have similar construction: porcelain coated hoods and bowls, porcelain flavor activator, stainless steel burners, side tray, button starter and steel cart. The also produce a portable gas grill called the Adventure series. This operates at 5500 BTUs and and can cook for up to 9 hours. While pre-assembled, it's designed to be portable with easily adjustable legs.
MECO also makes an outstanding portable charcoal grill called the Walk-A-bout. You don't have to put it together and it folds into a compact configuration. As with it's larger brethren, temperature control is achieve through hood and bowl adjustable vents.
Looking for a smoker? MECO has one with 351 square inches of smoking space with heat resistant wood sides and handles. It also has flavor channels for channeling the smoke. And if you're interested in a table-top grill, you'll find a 200 square inch model that runs on 1500 watts, has a thermostat control and is great at rotisserie.
To care for your grill, you may want to do a few things. You can season your cast iron by washing it with soapy water. To ready your Aussie grill for the season, you simply need to remove any dirt and dust, wash it again with the soapy water, and it will be ready to go. No need to jump through hoops to get your grill ready for another summer of fun! Lava rocks and briquettes are not needed, either. The Flavor Activator does the same thing, but better. Wire brush you iron grill parts occasionally so that rust will not occur. Never use oven cleaner on a grill, it is too corrosive.
In short, Aussie grills come in a variety of sizes and purposes. You may have to look a little harder for these grills, but should be able to find them at Lowes, Academy Sports & Outdoors as well as Sportkids Superstore.
